In earlier days, the most popular form of video games was computer games. Initially, computer games were essentially computer-controlled. Players would interact with the device to achieve predetermined targets and goals. Video games too are a form of computer games wherein a video display with interactive and vibrant visuals is the main focus. The display itself is designed to provide a player with feedback as the game continues.
Video and computer games have become immensely popular during the last three decades. However, this was not always the trend. These games came into existence almost five decades earlier but were never in demand in their initial years.
Video games have been ever evolving. Modern technology and innovations have helped create realistic and interactive games. These entertainment games were not as sensible when the concept was first being experimented with. Just like other forms of technology, video games too have had to evolve through many generations. This itself is testimony to the fast development of video games.
The 32-bit/64-bit era was the fifth generation of video game consoles. The 16-bit era was the fourth generation of video game consoles. The year 1983 and 1984 were blacklisted in the history of video games. It saw the unexpected fall and abrupt crash of the video game business. Numerous home computers and video game manufacturing companies declared bankruptcy. This crash also brought an end to the second generation of video gaming.
Today, the video game market is stable and booming. The popularity of video gaming pervades all age groups. Certain games are designed to attain goals and learn while playing. Video games are usually played to provide relief or as just plain entertainment. However, numerous game options are proving to be addictive. A number of parents and family members are complaining of compulsive and addictive behavior. This trend is noted especially in children and youngsters, who at times may lose sense of time because of the video games.

Back when video games first came out, there was Atari, and it came with games like Pac Man, Galaga, Millipede, and more. These games weren’t very expensive, and many households, despite their income, bought them for their kids.
Nowadays, there are numerous types of video games for several game systems. These modern game systems are a lot more expensive, making it difficult for every household to purchase them for their children. There is even a game system, the Nintendo Wii, which makes playing games feel like you’re actually on screen playing. If you are playing a bowling game on the brand-new Nintendo Wii, you actually roll a real bowling ball, and at the same time, you see yourself on the screen, actually playing. It’s a real technological advance! And it’s very fun and exciting for children as well as adults.
There are many different games for these various game consoles, such as football, basketball, baseball, and a real favorite for many people, Nascar. In the Nascar game, you can setup your own car, by choosing different tracks, just like you’re actually on a real race track. You can adjust the track bar on the car and change tires, and then it’s like you’re actually racing for the Nextel Cup, in real life. The graphics on these games are unreal, and it’s just like watching a game or TV. You choose the team that you want, and play someone else. Also, you can customize your game, and that is fun, too, especially when you’re beating your opponent.
There are also tournaments on these video games, especially the football and basketball ones. They will have up to a hundred people or more involved in these tournaments, and whoever wins first, second and third place wins prize money. There is also a show on ESPN that has actual tournaments, with the first prize being $100, 000. That certainly is a lot of money just to play a game on television. But there are so many people who practice frequently, just to be able to be part of such a tournament. They must figure out different defenses for their players, and the same for the offense. So, as you can say, video game playing is a billion dollar industry. And it’s obvious that they’re not just for kids, because what kid is going to be on ESPN? Not many, because most parents wouldn’t allow it.

Many kids across the country are enthralled with their new video games that they received as Christmas presents from family and friends. These children need very little instruction to help them get started playing fun and exciting video games that focus on sports events, fantasy thrillers and cartoon characters to provide hours of uninterrupted entertainment opportunities.
Some of these video games can be used on home computer systems but for the most part, these video games are operated on handheld game consoles, multimedia consoles or multimedia platforms. There are a variety of handheld controllers that are attached to the gaming consoles using cords or are powered with wireless networking technologies that allow children to play a video game from anywhere in the room.
The Xbox 360 multimedia platform is one of the latest operating systems for playing video games on. It features a game playing environment that allows the user to rotate their viewpoint in a 360 degree radius, and the visual aspects in each video game is very realistic for even the most seasoned of video game players.
Some video games are compatible for use on other gaming systems. The Nintendo Wii game system will play single or double-layered optical discs or 8-centimeter Nintendo GameCube video games too. The Game Boy Micro will play all video games that are made for the Game Boy Advance SP models.
The Nintendo DS has the capability to allow up to 16 players to network together and enjoy the same video game action and chat with each other as they enjoy their video games. The Nintendo DS will also play all games currently used by the Game Boy Advance and those made specifically for the Nintendo DS game system.
The Sony PlayStation Portable is commonly called a PSP by video gamers all over the world. This handheld video game system serves double duty as a video game player and one that will serve as a portable video and photo viewer. MP3-encoded songs can also be played when they are stored on the Memory Stick Duo that comes with all game consoles.
The Xbox features unbelievable graphics and an amazingly powerful hard drive system that some people compare to the hard drives found in their own personal computer systems that they have at home. Many of the XBOX video games are suitably rated for Teen and Mature audiences, and some of them may contain very graphic violence and adult themes that are not suitable for viewing by children.
The Xbox can be used as a home entertainment system too. The Xbox is well equipped to play many musical compact disks that are sold at major retailers around the country with brilliant sound qualities that might be found in more expensive home entertainment systems. The family can enjoy DVDs of their favorite movies and build a home library that is second to none.
Many of these game systems are equipped with wireless technologies and feature USB 2.0 connectivity. Video games can be played with surround sound features or through built-in speakers on many of the video gaming consoles. These video games will be shown in vivid digital screen colors and in sizes that are perfect for traveling, or for use by many players when attached to a home television unit.

Did you know that surgeons are now using video games to train with for laparoscopic surgery? In studies, surgeons with experience playing video games scored higher with their laparoscopic surgery skills than surgeons with no experience. The surgeons with the most experience playing video games made fewer mistakes and were overall faster with their procedures. These were only simulated surgeries, but these studies show that video games are not just for kids anymore.
Video games have long been blamed for obesity in children because of the hours spent playing these games sitting on the sofa. Now companies are producing games that add activity so our children can burn more energy while playing their favorite games. Games that require movement have obviously shown to burn more energy than normal screen games.
Did you know that the annual income made from video games surpasses the amount Hollywood makes on films? This was before the release of Playstation 3, Wii and Xbox games. The video game industry is only growing and so is the competition to release games faster than their rivals. With the right resources you can now develop your own games and some companies let you test their games for possible glitches in their software before they release them to the public. Nobody knows games like the people that play them on a regular basis. There are advances in this kind of technology almost daily making this industry a great idea for people trying to decide what kind of career to get involved in. I can remember a time when Atari was the hottest games on the market and who could have imagined that this industry would have grown so huge.

I’ve recently been thinking about where video games could be going in the future. I’m hoping to work in the game industry one day after I’ve finished university study and I’ve been wondering about it a lot. What do I want to see happen in the future? Well I may not have too many answers right now, but I have come up with a few ideas that I think may come into ‘play’ in the not too distant future.
Firstly forget Virtual Reality, as we know it. They’ve tried VR goggles and they made a lot of people sick in doing so. It’s probably never going to work very well in its current form. They’re still around and you can still buy them but they really don’t seem to be taking off. It will probably take a lot to get people totally immersed and involved in a new form of game play. It’s threatening to lose touch with the outside world and the people around you aren’t going to appreciate it much either. The Sci-fi neural implants are also both a long way off and not likely to be accepted by a majority of the general populace without some severe marketing and luck. I for one am not planning on going through brain surgery just to have a computer attached to my head. In fact I never want anyone to able to plug into my brain.
A technology that was brought to my attention by a zealous presenter at the local ‘Science and Technology Centre’ (a sort of science museum aimed at making science fun for children and juvenile adults such as yours truly) is that of ‘Augmented Reality’. Augmented Reality is essentially the overlaying of virtual elements onto the real world, such as a pair of transparent glasses that can display certain elements over the top of what is actually there. I agree with the presenter in that this could indeed have some awesome potential. Forget all the socially beneficial applications such as workmen being able to view underground pipes before digging, think about it from a games point of view. This technology could provide gamers with the ability to run around looking like complete idiots shooting at things that aren’t actually there and that no one else can see, kind of like in the film ‘They Live!’ The upside to this is that it would be a lot of fun. A group of people from the University of South Australia created the ‘ARQuake’ project, http://wearables.unisa.edu.au/projects/ARQuake/www/, merging the classic shooter Quake with this Augmented Reality technology. Again, this technology may not ever become overly popular, but it would be entertaining to play with.
Technology has driven the games industry for a long time with new games always trying to keep one step ahead of the competition. It started way back at the dawn of technology and it continues to this day. 2D graphics gave way to 3D and 3D is becoming ever better. Graphics are starting to lose the ability to impress like they once did. The step between Quake 2 and 3 was amazing, but DOOM 3 while being visually very impressive isn’t leaps and bounds ahead of its competitors in the same way new games used to be. 2D graphics encountered a similar problem; there comes a point where you just can’t do much more with graphics technology. It is this that turns graphics from striving for technological achievement to becoming art. It is my hope that we will start turning away from tech demos and return to game play and making great entertainment. Games such as Zelda: The Wind Waker or The Sims that strive to show greater depth of character through simplifying the game enough to portray emotions will hopefully become more common (and more fun… but that’s just one person’s view…). Technology plays a certain part in the conveying of emotions and story but it’s quite hard to focus on everything at once. When technology is easier and less essential to game sales we’ll hopefully see an increase in games that cast a lasting impression.
Somewhat unfortunately the rise of the ‘Casual Gamer’ will probably lead to more simplistic games being released. While personally I would love to see depth of story and characters, there are a significant number of players out there who want to pick up a game for twenty minutes or so, have a bit of fun, and then put it down until another time. These gamers are generally less interested in the latest greatest technology and more interested in a ‘fast food’ kind of entertainment that satisfies the moment, despite the lack of quality or the lasting effects. Hopefully the two game types can co-exist peacefully although recently it has been seen that some developers are cutting down on some of the planned depth of a title in order to accommodate the more casual gamer.
As technology pushes forwards boundaries are slowly being broken down between systems. We saw the Bleemcast a few years back enabling the running of Playstation games on the Dreamcast, and the PC is able to run almost anything given the right emulation software. Consoles are able to emulate other consoles and new consoles are being announced that promise the ability to play PC games. The Xbox 2 is reported to have a model in planning that comes in a PC case and with the ability to run both PC software and Xbox software. Macs can emulate Windows software and vice-versa. We’ll probably start seeing less of a distinction between consoles and PCs as the price of technology continues to drop and consoles continue to become more and more powerful and able to compete with the more expensive computers. Ideally we’ll see a single platform come into prominence so that everything can be run without purchasing a copious number of different machines, although that does have a downside in that it can establish a monopoly for one particular company.
The technology price drop and increase in power has also lead to more powerful hand-held machines than before. Real games, not just simple toys are now available for the portable market. The advent of PDAs and mobile phones with the ability to play games raises awareness of portable gaming and new competitors are starting to get in on the field that was once primarily dominated by Nintendo’s GameBoy. There is a new product, the gp32, that can run many different emulators and hence, many different system’s games (including some PC games).
I can’t say for sure what’s going to happen but these are just a few ideas that I’ve had recently. Hopefully the games industry will continue to strive towards new heights with new and interesting game play, stories, characters and ideas. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in the next few years.

Like novels, video games can be categorized into different genres. One of the genres of video games that exist is the role-playing games. Before there were video games, role-playing games were played, usually using dice. One example of role-playing in the real world was Dungeons and Dragons. In this game, you pretended to be a person who existed in a world where dragons, magic and other fantastical elements existed. Each of your actions in that world was mostly determined by the roll of the dice. You played with other people and they took on roles as well in that world as well. In the video game version, you take on the role of a person and use joystick or game console to do your actions on the screen. They just translated games that existed in the real world into video.
Sports video games are just video versions of games like tennis, football and American football. You can be Michael Jordan and play against other superstars of the NBA. Do you want to be favorite American football player? You can be that player or any other player in the video game version? You can be Tiger Woods in a video game version of golf. Video game version of real sports let you pretend to be a super star that you will probably never be in real life.
Sim is short for simulated and the video or computers usually have the word Sim in their title. It probably all started with a game called in Sim City. In Sim City, you pretend to be a person running a city. You had to build everything that made up a city and had to deal with disasters that would come out of nowhere so you wouldn’t get so bored just building things. A fire would happen in a building and would have to deal with that disaster. Some sim games deal with you being roller coaster or train baron. The popular games in this genre are simply called Sims these days. In these sim games, you pretend to be a person going through the stages of life and the troubles that you have in each stage of life.
Puzzle video games are games where you simply have to solve the puzzle to move to the next level. Some games are like the famous game called Concentration where you have to match all the pieces. Once you match all the pieces, you can go on to the next level. It can be like tic-tac-toe where you have to put three matching things together and then you can move on. Some are actually video game versions of jigsaw puzzles.
One popular genre is the strategy game genre. In this genre, you must you’re your mind against the computer or other opponents to win the game. One example of this game is the Civilization game series. In Civilization, you pretend to be a civilization like the Egyptians, Russians, Germans or any past civilization. Your civilization starts out at the cave man and you must find ways to evolve your civilization. While you are trying to evolve, other civilizations exist and they exist to destroy your civilization. You won this game by either beating all the other civilizations or by entering the Space Age. All you have really is your mind and you must use it or be destroyed in a strategy game.
